Man was able to invent the knife the moment they thought of separating or cutting something. Over the thousands of years, knives have evolved from stone cutting tools to instruments made of specifically designed materials for all kinds of activities, to include outdoors, survival, and just plain everyday use.
Most people own a knife or knives of some fashion or another. Of course, who would not recognize the infamous kitchen knife which every household has. Knives are also a must have for those who are engaging in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking and hunting. It is for this fact that there are a lot of companies manufacturing knives. There are also companies who make cheap knives because they know that they can sell them. Being able to tell the quality and durability of a knife is something that a knife enthusiast can easily do. How does someone become a master knife maker?
In order to become a master knife maker, you need have a full understanding about what knives are all about. There are dozens to hundreds of knife classifications out there and you have to be familiar with each one of them in order to be an effective knife maker. This is for the reason that you will need to know the classification of knives in order for you to suggest the right knife for your client depending on his or her needs. A surgeon will always require a different type and classification of knife compared to an outdoorsman. We are designed differently, and constructed differently.

An effective knife maker should know how to design a knife for a specific purpose and should have a thorough knowledge with regard to metalwork. All such skills and knowledge should be present in an effective knife maker.

To explain this adage further, say if you are looking to purchase a knife that you can throw then a knife maker would design one that is easy to throw - one that is light and balanced. If someone is looking for a rugged hunting knife, it has to be designed in such a way that it is durable and yet performs the function that is demanded of it.
Knives are made of many materials. Usually, the material used to create a knife will depend on its function. There a lot of knives designed with materials for durability. Some materials hold an edge better, some materials work better with thin slicing versus hard cutting.
In addition, knife makers are artists. They might produce a knife that looks good, has an exotic handle, or a special function such as a foldout knife, or a knife specifically designed for cutting rope.
